Willy improve or are his best days behind him?

By Jegbie

So Willy has come out and said: "I can say we have not seen the Gallas from 2006 this term so far. In a few matches, I have not been so good. With the French team in Sweden and Austria, I was not very good at some moments.

"I would close my eyes if I would say I am strong. That would mean I don't recognise I did have a few bad performances, as recently with my club against Hull City. Maybe I feel a little tried."Do I experience the most difficult period since I joined Arsenal? We could say yes. Above all I miss consistency. One match is good, the other one is not so good. However, I am doing everything to get to my best again."

Lots of gooners are moaning about our defence and at least Willy realises he has been a bit gash this season but not in the Senderos/Stepanovs vein!

The goals we have conceded read like this:

Fulham: set piece, poor defending by Gallas but was beaten by a more determined taller man.
Hull: 1 wonder goal that would have beaten anyone and 1 set piece that was down to a bit of poor defending but was also a great header.
Bolton: 1 goal from set piece, u expect that from Bolton – we still murdered them
Sunderland: 1 wonder goal that Song was at fault for partially for not making a challenge or taking the risk of conceding a free kick.

So we have conceded 5 goals in The Prem this season so far. Ch*vski 3 and Liverpool and Manure 4 each. I would say that is not too bad.

Gallas knows he needs to defend better. I just feel that the 3 aforementioned teams concede less because all their CB’s are over 6ft.

Liverpool have Skrtl, Agger, Hypia and Carragher, manure have Rio and Vidic and Ch*vski have Carvalho, Terry and Alex .... we have Kolo and Willy!

That is why we concede more set pieces! Our team is a lot shorter in height on average than our title rivals.

We used to be a big side from keeper to striker ..... Seaman, Keown, Campbell, TA, Viera, Petit, Henry, Bergkamp ... all over 6ft tall.

Now we are Almunia, Toure, Gallas, Fab, Denilson, RvP and Ade ..... that is why I feel we need to compensate for our physical disadvantage by raising our technical game.

Wenger gets upset because he figures we will concede goals from set pieces, he banks on us scoring more than we concede that’s why he’s always never as sad when we lose if we at least create the chances.

If I was Arsene I would do the following .... move Toure to centre midfield replacing Denilson and stick Djourou in at CB to see what happens. I would also like to see Silvestre given a chance at CB. However I am not Le Prof and I doubt he will. We just need to be patient.

However the reason we have lost or drawn the games we have is because we have been more toothless in attack than we have been shoddy in defence.

Hull and Fulham both easily winnable games. Sunderland – we did not attack enough.

Also all this talk on Fab is upsetting but it is International week.

There is no Prem news and the sports pages need to be filled somehow. Until I read something on the Arsenal site saying he is leaving then it is all media twaddle. Ronaldo was defo going to leave Manure cos he said it to the media right?

Affirmative, William Gallas will slide downhill and will never up again. Just study his movements on every match since the second half of 2007 till now, it was a struggle all the time. He NEVER look like a confident defender and he is slow and struggling most of the time. The strikers playing in the premier league is getting better and better all the time but Gallas is getting slower and slower. He cannot command the team's play or provide confidence yet he is the captain, how ironic !!! Mr. Wenger you are intelligent manager and you can see it happening, please do something to save Arsenal's chances of trophies in 2008.

Mate, i really like your blog, but believe that this is a premature comment in terms of Toure moving to midfield!!
Fristly......when was the last Kolo played in central midefield? He would get eaten there.....jst for the fact he isn't accustomed to the position.....as he has been playing at Centre back for most of his professional career. I believe Song and Denilson are better in the midfield area than Kolo. Kolo should stick to defending. Now what about our 'beloved captain'?? Would you say he is playing at the top of his game? Was it the man he should've been marking that scored against us at Fulham, Bolton and Hull??? I think Willy should be dropped....i know he is our captain and that's why he can't be droppped......but really it should be Kolo and Djourou! Gallas is nowhere near the standard he was playing at Chavski....but io think that may me down to the fact that he didn't have to header as Terry did that for him.

Basically Gallas should never have been Captain.....because then it wouldn't be such a big thing if we dropped him!!

Enjoy!
