Wenger’s biggest challenge ahead of Wigan game
Which Arsenal side will turn up on Saturday??
That’s the question Arsène Wenger and Gooners will be asking themselves ahead of the match against Wigan, a tricky match at the best of times against a team capable of causing us a few problems.
Steve Bruce’s sides work hard and in Emile Heskey and Amir Zaki, they have enough power and pace to give us as hard a match as they did Liverpool, who they were unfortunate not to beat earlier this season.
In some respects, the ease with which we beat the Latics in the Carling Cup with our kids could prove our undoing....
The senior boys will turn up and believe, as they did against Hull City, that the result will take care of itself. And we all know what happened that day.
Building on the success of last weekend’s victory over Ch*vski is imperative and is going to require some resolute organisation.
We have no boss in midfield to win the ball and break up opposing attacks in order to give our forwards a chance to carve out their openings.
Much will depend on whether the likes of Alex Song and Denilson maintain their discipline and continue to grow.
If Wigan’s game against West Brom last weekend is anything to go by, Chris Kirkland is in formidable form and it will take something special to beat him.
There’s no doubt that, even with our injuries, we have a side capable of beating Wigan, but it’s a fine act getting a balance between trying too hard and labouring or thinking the game will win itself and falling to another embarrassing defeat.
No wonder Wenger talked about maintaining humility after beating the Ch*vs – he knows how quickly success goes to these young players’ heads.
Wenger’s motivational skills will be needed in spades if we are not to slip back to the bad old habits of complacency and over-playing that have caused us such frustration so far this season.
Nothing less than three points will do if we are to start to build the confidence and momentum necessary to revive our domestic season.

The defeat to our carling cup team, should have ended their bid headed thinking holiday. And someone should should tell Wenger to employ a new motivator. I think he the big headed small boys needed motivation and strict correction.
Let Wishere start on the wing, or spring up a suprise like Simpson( he wasnt bad on the right wing against Burnley, he has the speed and the strenght, somewhat like Walcott) or Gibbs on the wing.
Let Bendtner play for the reserves consistently, or loan him. He should clearly be behind Vela and perhaps Simpson.
Watching bentner squander those chances, the thought of a hungry Eduardo da Silva returning to fitness makes me very optimistic about our finishing potential after christmas. With Eduardo on the pitch we would certianly not see six one on ones with the opposition keeper and no goals. One can only hope that he can regain the conifdence that he exuded after a season in Zangreb where he scored 50+ goals for club and country. His game doesnt really rely on pace, simply bieng in the right place at the right time and clinical technicality in front of goal. Once Eduardo gets back we don’t have to worry about Mr Pink leading the line anymore. Get well soon our brazillian friend.
I wouldn't mind seeing Lansbury on the right actually. He did alright at Right back and if Sagna is to play then he could bomb on in front of Lansbury and Henri would be able to cover well.
I agree "clacko the gooner". Lansbury looked good and he was being played out of position. I think either denilson should be given a breather, not dropped, and let one of the younger ads have a pop. I wouldnt mind seeing simpson start on the wing tbh.
MY starting XI would be:
Almunia
Sagna Gallas Djourou Clichy
Simpson or Lansbury Fabregas Song Nasri
RVP Adebayor
gallas misses the match thru injury,
i reckon team will be:
Almunia
Sagna, Djourou, Silvestre (or Toure), Clichy
Song
Denilson, Fabregas, Nasri
RVP, Adebayor
