8 Comments | So Manu Adebayor has signed a new deal, extending his previous contract by a year or two, with reports suggesting that he is now tied to the club until 2012 and on £80,000 per week.
Given his impact last season, I can understand why our Togo forward wanted to be recognised for his exploits, especially with football being such an uncertain and short term career.
Remember the start of last season? All the talk was of Robin Van Persie taking over the mantle as the number one striker at the Club.
Given his injuries and the fact that he plays in a deeper position, Adebayor’s importance became even more stark as the season went on.
I’ve always had mixed feelings about Adebayor – his running and effort in his first two full seasons made up for a lack of the poise and excellence we’d seen from Thierry Henry. He wanted to prove his worth to the team and the fans and last season, he did that in spades.
But with success comes ego –and the shenanigans we endure during the summer. I don’t buy Adebayor’s assertion that he had nothing to do with it. He was looking after himself and letting the soap opera play out before deciding what would be his best play
We can’t dismiss his contribution last season, or indeed this, having slotted away a simple chance to make the FC Twente return something of a formality – but there have been plenty of misses that have left many of us scratching our heads.
It’s certainly not a lack of ability on Adebayor’s behalf, just a matter of not focusing to complete the execution of chances he has proved he can put away.
If Adebayor had left during the summer, I wouldn’t have been too upset, but seeing him in some of the pre-season games made me realise that his pace, power and aerial ability give him a combination of skills not many strikers can call upon.
A new player would have had to be integrated into the team and the less upheaval we have, the better.
The fact that he remained at Arsenal is actually a triumph for the Club. Arsene Wenger did not want to sell him, dug his heels in, and spun the situation to his advantage, getting the player to extend his deal and proving that, if he wants to keep a player, he keeps him. We’re not quite the selling club everyone claims us to be.
So it is a concern to hear some Gooners booing Adebayor on Saturday. There was a muted response when he took to the pitch and when he missed another of the chances that could have made victory a little more comfortable, the boos started again.
I don’t blame Wenger when he said: “We have to get behind him and support him because he is a tremendous force and (is of) tremendous importance for the team - you want your own fans to be behind him.
"What happened in the transfer period did not always reflect his deep desire and there was manipulation from agents on both sides, but overall I am positive he will recover. Every player needs to feel wanted.”
Now is the time to get behind Adebayor. He is our player, for this season at least, and without him playing at his best and feeling loved, we won’t win anything.

Absolutely right. i noticed to in pre-season that adebayor is more importants than we thought. we need him to shine so lets get behind him. its obvious he loves arsenal. although i think the jeers push him on to prove himself again. great article. made up for the stupid one about our academy before.
What a load of tosh, he was with us for four months and was turned by Manure's interest, the only reason he is at Arsenal is that neither Barcelona or Milan wanted the two face greedy twat, he has never said sorry for whacking Bendtner he still needs too many chances on goal and he doesn't understand the offside rule.
He told his agent to stir up the interest, he hasn't apologised for the bullshit during the summer, he deserves everyting he gets from Arsenal fans.
I have been a ticket season holder for twenty years and normally I would not boo an Arsenal player, but he is an exception, he wants to go, so let the greedy bastard go, he is a disgrace to the Arsenal.
Absolutely right. I have never booed an Arsenal player, but am sick of the player power bullshit that exists at our club and the way Adebaywhore acted in the summer was a disgrace. He (and the rest of the squad) now know what we feel about how he has behaved. I looked back on his 30 goals last season and believe that I would have scored at least half of them. I am avaiable for less than £40k per week, guess what, i'll play for free. Totally sick of greedy players and if you need 5 chances to score one goal you are not worth £80k per week.
The reason he is still at Arsenal is because no-one else would pay his fee nor his wages and that is the only reason.
He is so thick skinned that despite being booed on Saturday he signs a contract extension on Monday, he is all about money and for this one occassion only I agreed with the crowds response. Now let's sign some players that want to wear the shirt with pride
well wotover happened is past and now he is an Arsenalplayer out on the battle field fighting a war. its our job to make the task easy. i can undestand some fans being not happy but this is not the time, lets talk about it after winning the titile, lets get together and make emirates a hell for visiting teams, lets show some unity and fan power.
i hope injuries want be an excuse for any short commings this season, if we fail, its not an excuse any more
he lacks ball-control first touch rubbish he reminds of lee chapman some of you akbs would try to tell a steward for arsenal was the best there is he will never be looked uoto like hen ry wrighty smudger i could go wright to ronnie rooke and he would come in the bottom five of arsenal strikers
"Ade-Bay_Or"
Ade-Bay-Orrrrrrrrrrrrrr"
"give him the ball"
"one in four......"
How I wish Eduardo was not injured, lets face it of all the strikers that we have Eduardo is the only one that has partnered Adebayor perfectly, RVP is always injured and Bendtner is not ready. Another thing is, Has anyone noticed how Nasri looks like a carbon copy of Rosicky(Including injuries) and how Afellay would be a perfect replacement for Hleb.
