Poll: Will Arsene Wenger make any signings before the transfer window closes?

With only 30 hours before the transfer window closes, Arsene Wenger is running out of time if he wants to bolster the squad for the new season.

I really wish the window closed before the start of the campaign, so we knew where we were and didn’t have to wait for players to be integrated a month or so after pre-season, but then again, there are a few things about football I’d change (cutting out internationals just as the season is getting going, for a start.)

Seven goals scored and none conceded in the last week may have papered over the cracks, but I think most Gooners would like Le Boss to add one more body to the midfield.

Wenger must be aware that Aaron Ramsey, Abou Diaby and Denilson, let alone Amauri Bischoff, are not yet experienced enough to keep the Gunners competing for honours and he has confirmed that if he can, he will sign at least one player.

Whether that is ‘a big leader in the middle’ that Patrick Vieira said we need yesterday, remains to be seen. Certainly Xabi Alonso, Stephane Mbia or even Gareth Barry (which is, admittedly, unlikely) would be welcome at Emirates.

But I have a feeling that Wenger will sign TWO players before the end of the window.

Together with an experienced midfielder, I suspect he will sign a long term target that no one has heard of, a younger player in the Denilson mould who will provide us with more options and cover for the injuries and suspensions we will undoubtedly endure over the next nine months.

But what do you think? Will Wenger get his chequebook out?

No money, no additions

Vieira was sitting with Silvestre at The Emirates yesterday, even though Inter where playing their first game of the season.
He might be injured, i don't know, but I still doubt the special one would let him go to an Arsenal game instead of Inters opener.

Stop getting everyone's hopes up.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFabregas' Dad

I trhink you have it about right. I think it will be 2 no 1 coming in. A defenseive midfielder and a more versatile player who can play in a variety of positions which is really what appeals to AW. As for the morons who claim that we have no money to spend well, there are none so blind as those who wont see. Funnily enough they are usually supporters of clubs like Man Utd or Chelsea whose debts almost equal the GDP of a small country. As fans we simply have to ignore these idiots and look forward to the day when UEFA slaps them with a European ban and transfer freeze. Whereas Chelsea's owner can simply just forgive the debt to him Man Utd's long history of buying trophies will come to a brutal end which will see them struggling to win anything and without any european money to sustain the ridiculous debt they have, may face bankruptcy and administration.

I'm hearing/seeing on various websites rumours of Vieira signing on for a year?

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSue

Sack Wenger. We'll never make any more progress with him! That's fact and you know it..sad but true..

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSwe

yup...will we re-sign vieira? even he was injured he should watch his club matach rather than come to watch arsenal..so strange...

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterdc

If we sign Alonso we should kiss goodbye to any chance of success. We need a DM, not a playmaker. Same if we signed Paddy. His best years are behind him.

But the options are closing down. Inler says he won't sign, Johnson looks set to sign a new deal. Veloso deal has gone quiet for weeks. Who's left? Wenger will surprise us all!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNeal

I also think we might sign more than one. Convinced Wenger will try and do what he's done the past couple of seasons - late deals. And whoever said there is 'no money' available, really doesn't have a clue!!!

Agree with changing the transfer window closing date and international friendlies so they don't fall at the beginning of the season. Not sure there much that can be done about the WC qualifiers that are coming up.

Vieira will not re-join. Period!!

SWE? Gosh i dont actually believe that there are pricks suck as yourself supporting Arsenal. I am flabergasted at the sometimes incredible stupidity of some arsenal fans, of which YOU are a clear and perfect example. Go away and support Spurs where every year they sack the manager. I wish i cud bump into you somewhere and smack some sense into you! As you seem to know it all, go out on a limb and tell us who YOU in all your knowledge will replace Wenger with! Prick!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarco

hes got soemthing lined up, i can smell it

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterabc

NO ONE WILL SIGN THAT'S FOR SURE UNLESS IF WE GET UNKNOWN PLAYER!!!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLebanese Arsenal Fan

He will buy either no-one or he will buy someone to but in the reserves. Wenger will use our recent performances as justification for doing nothing.

Hopefully though he will buy 2 or 3. A commanding defender, a midfield leader and , if RVP is injured, a lethal forward. But we all know that's not gonna happen.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStu

We pray that persie is not seriously injured!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterjj

RVP got the all clear

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStu

Well.. we need a Central Defensive Midfeilder, experienced, inspiring, legendary, brilliant..... resign Patrick Viera!!!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterphil AFC

I think AW will sign... No one... Yes, he is keen to buy but since every clubs out there know AW is looking to buy at least a DM after we lost Flamini etc.. They definitely will jack up the price!!! Since AW is not the type to spend silly monies on players, for sure he won't match those so called silly price tags labelled on players he is interested!! With the nice display versus Newcastle, all these "I am trying my best to get players I want" is basically.... sweet talk... Anyway, I hope I'm wrong....

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commentertom

Vieira has signed this afternoon, will be announced tomorrow. 100% guaranteed. I'm trying to get an update on the Metzelder story - my understanding is that there is an issue about him playing against RM should the draw happen.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterinsideashburton

Meanwhile, Flamini played right back for AC Milan today. Too bad... Should've stayed (@Arsenal) where he will play in his favored position.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterOk

None.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHenry

alonso to fill the hole infront of the defence and just sweep up ,no defencive midfielder, thats unarsenal! gilberto was hardly a warlord, just a tidy up kinda guy! when we first had gilberto everyone was blind to wat he actually did until he was injured, alonso is simular except he can play!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterbergkamp

insideashburton i don't believe you.

however i would love it so much if you got proved right. i WANT to be wrong by disbelieving you.

would be great!

i know viera's past his best but a 1 year deal would be a superb piece of bsuiness i think. he will probably have some injuries and all but come on he can add some real quality to cm even if he's not as good as before.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

if we resign patrick vieira ima shag my bird on one of them cannons near the arsenal shop in the early hours! *plan on doin it anyway sooner or later*

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterbergkamp

vieira is a dressing room bull, exactly wat we need,no more violin songs off willy-g's ipod, big pat gonna be giving orders like that bloke on the burger van outside the armoury

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterbergkamp

Wenger wont buy he is too stubborn, cos we the fans want him to buy he is determined to keep faith with what he has. Arsene my dear friend, we know you have done well with all the youngsters for the past years but we havent won anything and thats because there is no experience and the likes of cesc and clichy have no one to look up to, they im sure would get a great buzz in having a Villa or a Messi playing along side them just like when Bergkamp gave the place a buzz including the fans, the time has come for you to stop being so stubborn and get the place buzzing again by signing a couple of world class players otherwise season ticket holders like me are starting to get restless. We love what you have done for our club dearly but everyone has their time and i just wish the fans dont start turning against you.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterthe goon

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNigel Winterburn

Not sure how i feel about that Metzelder rumour. Sure he is a big, hard tackling defender but he was injured all of last season and was heavily criticized by many during the Euros. Nor can i see Wenger going for an actual defender.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStu

Almunia
Sagna Toure Metzelder Clichy

Nasri Vieira Fabregas Vela

RvP Adebayor

Buy Vieira for 1-2m, Metzelder on loan, we'd win the league
Bench: Fabianski
Gallas
Diaby
Rosicky
Denilson
Theo
Bendtner

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterOneTonyAdams

here is some good news for everyone. Hleb is a sub for Barca, Henry is forced play left midfield and Flamini was made to play right-back for milan. Barca are losing and Milan lost. Just goes to show that once you leave Arsenal your career is likely to take a nose-dive. Success at AFC = failure everywhere else. (with the respectful exception of a few)

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStu

In my opinion, the captain of Zenit St Petersburgh (guy with the long blond hair whose name I can't recall at the moment) would be an ideal signing. He was awesome against Man U the other night and would add plenty of muscle and steel into the defemsive midfield role.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCob

mbia?stephane mbia?
hope you are not on about the cameroonian player, because not only will he not make the arsenal 1st team yet,he's not even 23 yet so what difference will he be to the team compared to the lot we have.in terms of experience?
do your research b4 postings.

what we need is a running man in the mould of flamini and song can do that job,if not a fit bischoff will be able to,yes he can, because he's a busy-bee kind of player.
barca won't sell yaya,so forget him,but a name i have been surprised not to have heard so far with the goon fans is MOMO SISSOKO.

now tell me am crazy but that guy is one hell of a water carrier and we could do with one.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commentercheeky-gooner

Thanks Gabriel, Cheeky Gooner.

Actually, if YOU did your research, you'd see that Mbia is a player we have been linked with in the past week.

This is one of a number of stories about it: http://www.premiershiplatest.com/news/arsenal-offer-djourou-bid-snatch-everton-5513332.html

However, every fan has a right to their own opinions and I've not seen him play, so he may well not be good enough. I never said he was, simply that he was an option, according to reports.

August 31, 2008 | Registered CommenterDA

Just checked and the player's name is Anatoliy Tymoshchuk. He put in plenty of work breaking up United's attack and got forward plenty too. One crunching tackle on Rooney early on showed how he meant business. With his name, he must be Russian or Ukrainian.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCob

i wasn't slating you, more drawing your attention to the fact that mbia is a 22yr old that am aware has been linked to arsenal and i have watched him a few times as well as during the anc in january and he will be a good addition in the form of a squad member.

but if am being truthful,he's not better than denilson, diaby, song or even djourou in the position we are all hoping to acquire someone for.and just so you know we are all in the same boat here.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commentercheeky-gooner

Tymoschuk is Ukrainian. Think he's in his late 20's, which Wenger would consider old but he does look good and a real leader.

On M'bia, we don't need another squad player but a starter. Speaking of Zenit players, what do ye think about Denisov? Don't really know much about him but he is a CM and is relatively young. He has been with them his whole career and he scored the opener in the EUFA cup.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStu

reading the rumour mill... Viera to sign for 1-2 mill or on loan. Possibly Henry for 9.5 mill, Owen for 9 million or swap for Brendtner, Veloso for 18 mill, Metzelder on loan.. Kerlon to arsenal next season.. An interesting pint made by one of these wannabee pundits.."Henry to be resigned by Arsenal by the end of the transfer window. The shirts sales will make it cash neutral."

Most of this is bollocks but if some of it is true we could have a killer team to win the league this season!!

Come on sports fans what do u think.. I am still unconvinced but pray Le Boss has a plan!!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterphil AFC

LMAO we cant get viera for 1-2 million, itl be more than that.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterabc

all arsenal fans should cool there temper. AW will suprise everybody 2morow by buying 2 or 3 MD players before deadline.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterernest

Metzelder to sign on loan..the "new" defensive midfielder to be....Kolo Toure

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterD

The only problem with that is that Wenger already said Toure wouldn't be moving forward.

I'm a bit concerned by the JD romours. If Metzelder does arrive then maybe AW will sell JD to WHU. Hope not though, I really lke Djourou.

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStu

listen guys I wish we sign veira nw before tomorrow but I know wenger will not sign him. Veira is great player and he will help improve out squad and help us at certain times during the season I would defitnetley not mind having him and someone else, like alonso or another creative midfielder
come on guy looks like bright things are actually going to come to emirates this season

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermo

the goon you say we should buy world class players for the likes of clichy and fabregas to look up to and suggest we buy messi?

1) messi would cost a ridiculous amount (only chelsea can pay that)
2) fabregas and clichy aren't players who need to be looking up to anyone, besides which if those players joined they wouldn't have to look up to them, cesc and clichy are two of the best players in the world in their positions, they don't need any help.

if anyone needs some guidance it's our reserve players and backup players like diaby, denilson, song to help them make the step up in the future.

besides which the past few years we DID have a lot of experience.
Almunia
Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
Hleb Fabregas Flamini Rosicky
RvP Adebayor

mate the only inexperienced players in that team were ade and flamini and both had played a lot in our first team before.

on the bench- lehmann, gilberto, senderos, eboue, bendtner

come on mate stop believing the media drivel we had more than enough experience to win the league. blaming a lack of experience on not winning was an excuse which is simply not true.

in previous years like when we reached the cl final we had ljungberg, pires, henry etc. experienced as hell.

it's one thing to say we don't have as much experience in dm now, that's true, but come on mate don'#t just repeat what the media tells you.

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

wenger will sign metzelder and alonso
