Play Fantasy Arsene Wenger - who should face Liverpool tonight?

By Avenell Dave

I’m delighted that some of the senior players have been included in tonight’s squad to face Liverpool.

Granted, the Carling Cup isn’t exactly prestigious in the big scheme of things, but the further we get, the more experience the younger players will get.

On top of that, while the title and Champions League remain our main targets, any piece of meaningful silverware is worth fighting for, not to mention the importance of any sort of victory over one of our rivals.

When you look at the squad that has been announced, the only real surprise for me is the absence of Carlos Vela, having been trumpeted in the Arsenal TV coverage earlier this week.

I’d love to see Kyle Bartley – a promising long term option at centre-back – replace Mikael Silvestre in the side, but I doubt that will happen and maybe Fishface’s experience will come in handy.

I can see Samir Nasri playing upfront with Nick Bendtner and Eduardo, or further back giving Gilles Sunu or Sanchez Watt another chance.

From the squad that’s been announced, I can’t really predict it, to be honest.

If we win, you can guarantee the “Wenger’s Wonders” line will be dished out by the media: if we lose, the same writers will question Project Youth after failing to beat Liverpool for the eighth time (yes, you have to go back to that 6-3 Carling Cup game to our last victory over Liverpool!).

Neither will be correct, especially given the experience of some of our players.

Arsenal v Liverpool games are always electric affairs though and I for one can’ wait for the game to kick off.

Come on you Gunners!

Wenger will play a holding mid fielder and has said bendy will get playing time, hence sub. Also arsene said merida will play so that is why no Watt.

I think Nasri might play further forward until he has played a full game or two.
He may play as one of the attacking three. It really highlights our options when you go to pick this Carlin Cup squad.
