This is a time for bravery, Mr Wenger

Arsene Wenger has picked a succession of French captains since he joined Arsenal.

When Tony Adams retired, warrior Patrick Vieira was the natural replacement, followed by Thierry Henry the talisman and then William Gallas the….

I can’t really think of the right word to describe Gallas’ style on the pitch. A lot of the time he plays as he acts off it – and having met him a couple of times, I can tell you, he’s pretty laid back and enjoyed the odd cigarette in this health-conscious age we live in.

Gallas scored the goal that beat Ch*vski last season; he scored the goal that set us on our way against FC Twente a couple of weeks ago and yet…

When Manu Adebayor joined Arsenal, a raw but talented young forward, I remember how he ran for every ball, determined to win the hearts of those who wondered whether he was fit to share a pitch with Henry.

Two moments stick out – the pass to Henry which prompted our equaliser at Highbury and subsequently led to our accession to the Champions League; and the goal at Old Trafford last season after working tirelessly on his own for almost 90 minutes.

And so too with Gallas, whose running and chasing to prove he was not just a Ch*vski reject made most of us think we had a real bargain on our hands.

But what do both players have in common? Both of them, acting as if they have done what they need to deserve a regular place and the adoration of the fans, appear to be resting on their laurels.

Arsene Wenger could well get away with dropping both of them for tomorrow’s Champions League match and say that he was resting them for the Newcastle game – and at the same time send out a message to them that they have no divine right to remain in the side.

Even on ArsenalTV after the game, when asked whether he would do his captain's job in the days ahead, Gallas seemed not to think it was his responsibility: "Everybody knows what they have to do...they have experience and they have one more year. Everybody knows what he has to do on the pitch." Hardly a rallying cry.

Lee Dixon, who must go down as one of our truly great servants, said it all when he commented:"It was the worst performance I've seen from an Arsenal team in a long time.

"Tony Adams was sitting just behind me and I said to him, 'Where's the leadership?' I blame the captain for that. I reckon Gallas is to blame. He's not leading that team."

We all know that Gallas is not captain material and if Cesc Fabregas is fit tomorrow, it’s the perfect time to give him the armband. How many times has Cesc scored for Arsenal and contorted his face in the way any of us would do at achieving something so monumental?

But will Arsene be brave enough to drop Gallas and made the drastic changes to personnel that we so clearly and desperately need?

No, I don't think so either.

Ade's back, so now is the time to back the Togonator

So Manu Adebayor has signed a new deal, extending his previous contract by a year or two, with reports suggesting that he is now tied to the club until 2012 and on £80,000 per week.

Given his impact last season, I can understand why our Togo forward wanted to be recognised for his exploits, especially with football being such an uncertain and short term career.

Remember the start of last season? All the talk was of Robin Van Persie taking over the mantle as the number one striker at the Club.

Given his injuries and the fact that he plays in a deeper position, Adebayor’s importance became even more stark as the season went on.

I’ve always had mixed feelings about Adebayor – his running and effort in his first two full seasons made up for a lack of the poise and excellence we’d seen from Thierry Henry. He wanted to prove his worth to the team and the fans and last season, he did that in spades.

But with success comes ego –and the shenanigans we endure during the summer. I don’t buy Adebayor’s assertion that he had nothing to do with it. He was looking after himself and letting the soap opera play out before deciding what would be his best play

We can’t dismiss his contribution last season, or indeed this, having slotted away a simple chance to make the FC Twente return something of a formality – but there have been plenty of misses that have left many of us scratching our heads.

It’s certainly not a lack of ability on Adebayor’s behalf, just a matter of not focusing to complete the execution of chances he has proved he can put away.

If Adebayor had left during the summer, I wouldn’t have been too upset, but seeing him in some of the pre-season games made me realise that his pace, power and aerial ability give him a combination of skills not many strikers can call upon.

A new player would have had to be integrated into the team and the less upheaval we have, the better.

The fact that he remained at Arsenal is actually a triumph for the Club. Arsene Wenger did not want to sell him, dug his heels in, and spun the situation to his advantage, getting the player to extend his deal and proving that, if he wants to keep a player, he keeps him. We’re not quite the selling club everyone claims us to be.

So it is a concern to hear some Gooners booing Adebayor on Saturday. There was a muted response when he took to the pitch and when he missed another of the chances that could have made victory a little more comfortable, the boos started again.

I don’t blame Wenger when he said: “We have to get behind him and support him because he is a tremendous force and (is of) tremendous importance for the team - you want your own fans to be behind him.

"What happened in the transfer period did not always reflect his deep desire and there was manipulation from agents on both sides, but overall I am positive he will recover. Every player needs to feel wanted.”

Now is the time to get behind Adebayor. He is our player, for this season at least, and without him playing at his best and feeling loved, we won’t win anything.

Your vote: Arsenal Addicts want Cesc as skipper

In terms of medal winners, Cesc Fabregas is the most successful player in the Arsenal squad, having just collected his winner's medal for helping Spain to their Euro 2008 triumph.

Now before you go barking at me that Kolo Toure has a Premier League winner's medal, as well as two FA Cup winners medals, I agree that the Ivorian's haul is greater than that of Cesc (who also has an FA Cup victory to boast about) but my point is that Fabregas's collection is more impressive and of all of his current club compatriots, he is the only player to have a recent success to talk about.

So that could be one of the many reasons that you Addicts have voted Fab 4 tops in our poll of who should take over the skipper's armband for the Arsenal next season.

Cesc amassed an impressive 45% in our poll, with Kolo coming in second place with a little under 37%.

Current captain William Gallas deserves to be stripped of the honour, according to those who voted, with the French 30-year-old gaining only a 12% vote of confidence.

And our other candidates - Gael Clichy and Emmanuel Adebayor - notched just 6% between them, although the latter was obviously the booby prize winner with just 1% of you choosing him as your man for on-field leader.

The Gunners play their first serious pre-season game on Wednesday when they face Jens Lehmann's Stuttgart and I suspect that if Arsene Wenger is going to make a captaincy change we'll know about it when that game kicks off.

Whether he'll pay attention to our Arsenal Addict poll, I've no idea. But if you're reading this Arsene, click here to see our full poll results and to hear what us Gooners are thinking ahead of the new season.
